Honours Project — Self Directed Research Project — Editorial — Typography2025This project is a self-directed and researched brief for my final honours project. I decided to focus of educational resources on the history of typography, as this was an area in which I wanted to conduct my own research, in extension to my education in typography classes. While type history is often considered a niche, academic discipline, engaging with historical contexts of design can be hugely beneficial for a creative practitioner. The skill of analysing works of design, whether print, screen, type, etc, carries over into how we as designers critically reflect on our own work.
It is, at its core, a type specimen that aims to engage design students with the historical contexts and attitudes behind the more well-known and commonly used type styles. It contextualises typeface classifications within their respective periods by drawing parallels with architectural styles. This presents typefaces as a sort of ‘time capsule’, that can be seen as a reflection of their historical contexts.
Maintaining a contemporary layout and colour palette keeps the publication attractive and accessible to young design students and allows the typefaces and images of architecture to shine, highlighting the parallels between the two disciplines of design, and building their own unique aesthetic in each section. This is done to help students understand the attitudes that are behind and communicated through the type styles.
